WHAT ARE OUR INTUITIVE SENSES OR CLAIRS?
OUR SENSES/CLAIRS:
“The senses are a kind of reason. Taste, touch and smell, hearing and seeing, are not merely a means to sensation, enjoyable or otherwise, but they are also a means to knowledge – and are, indeed, your only actual means to knowledge” …Joseph Campbell
Our intutition speaks to us through our senses and is often called our sixth sense. We all have these senses, or psychic channels, known as the clairs. Clair is a French word meaning clear.
“Intuition, clair senses and psychic abilities are often used interchangeably to describe extrasensory skills that allow us to hear, see or sense specific messages or images on a non-physical level” …Sandra Martinez
I will cover seven intuitive senses: clairvoyance, clairsentience, clairaudience, claircognizance, clairalience, clairgustance and clairtangency.
There are four main clairs that most of us are familiar with…
Clairvoyance – clear seeing
Clairsentience – clear feeling
Clairaudience – clear hearing and
Claircognizance - clear knowing.

THE FOUR MAIN CLAIRS:
Clairvoyance: is when one receives visions through their mind’s eye, or third eye. It can feel similar to a daydream.
- Clairvoyants can have visions, see a movie clip in their mind or in their dreams.
- They may receive flashes of a person in spirit, sparkling lights or symbols.
- They may see peoples' auras.
- Clairvoyants are highly visual people and most likely artistic.
- Visual harmony is important to those who are clairvoyant and they appreciate
anything pleasing to the eye.
Clairsentience: is when one feels through physical and emotional feelings.
- They can sense a person or someone in spirit.
- They can get a strong ‘gut’ feeling, positive or negative, about a person or a
particular situation.
- They may feel events, good or bad, before they happen.
- Clairsentients can be highly sensitive and may have difficulty dealing with crowds.
- Clairsentients need to take time for rest and self-care.
Clairaudience: is when we one hears words, sounds or music in their mind.
- Clairaudients can hear words clearly as if they are having a conversation with someone
- even though they are alone. They may be proficient at automatic writing (channeling spirit).
- They can connect deeply and feel inspired by music and song lyrics.
- They may hear someone call their name when no one is around.
- Clairaudients enjoy quiet time alone – too much noise can be over stimulating.
Claircognizance: is when a knowing or message comes into one’s mind, seemingly from nowhere.
- Claircognizants receive direct communication through revelations and often
receive brilliant ideas for inventions, teachings and businesses.
- They can know facts without having read or heard anything about a particular subject
before, as if the information had just been downloaded into their brain.
- They may be able to fix electronic and mechanical items without referring to the
instruction booklet.
- They can be uncomfortable with small talk, preferring deeper and more profound
discussions.
- They may be skeptical about psychic abilities and the ‘metaphysical’ unless they have
had or witnessed a lifesaving experience that cannot be explained.
HOW WE CAN TELL WHICH IS OUR STRONGEST CLAIR:
All of our clairs are equally efficient at receiving true and helpful information however we usually have one or two that are naturally stronger.
What is our strongest intuitive sense? Answering the following questions may help us decide.
1. If we think back to a holiday we took. What stands out most in the memory of it?
(a) The beautiful sights of nature, the houses and buildings or something we witnessed.
(b) The peaceful, romantic, exhilarating or maybe stressful feelings of the trip.
(c) The silence, the noisy traffic, the chirping of birds, wind in the trees, crashing surf on the
beach or the music we heard.
(d) The interesting and important historic and cultural information.
2. When you we meet someone new, what do we first notice about a person?
(a) The way they look, such as clothing, hair, smile or general attractiveness.
(b) How we feel around the person, such as being comfortable, safe, amused or not.
(c) The sound or tone of the person’s voice or laughter.
(d) Did we find the person interesting. Could they maybe someone who could help us in
our career.
3. If we recall a movie that we truly enjoyed, what comes to mind first about it?
(a) The actors, the lighting, the costumes or the scenery.
(b) The way the movie made us laugh, cry, or feel in some other way.
(c) The musical score or sound of the actors’ voices.
(d) The interesting plot or the lessons that we or the movie’s characters learnt.
If you selected...
Mainly (a) answers – this signifies clairvoyance.
Mainly (b) answers – signifies clairsentience.
Mainly (c) answers – signifies clairaudience and
Mainly (d) answers – signifies claircognizance.
OTHER CLAIRS:
Clairgustance – clear tasting.
The ability to experience a taste that is not actually on our taste buds. We may taste a favourite food of someone in spirit or maybe their brand of coffee.
Clairtangency - clear touching.
The ability to receive intuitive messages or information by touching an object. It is also commonly known as psychometry. A medium may get information about a missing person or someone in spirit by holding something that belonged to them, such as a watch or a piece of their jewellery.
Clairalience – clear smelling.
The ability to smell scents that have no physical source. For instance, we may smell the perfume, fragrance of their favourite flower or cigarette smoke of someone who is in the spirit realm.
I used to practice mediumship and remember when facilitating a reading for a young lady, I could smell dense smoke, even though none was visible. Sadly, the lady’s friend that was coming through had passed in a house fire. Even though I am mainly clairaudient, the first part of the reading had come via ‘clairalience’.
WAYS WE CAN STRENGTHEN OUR CLAIRS:
1. By being more aware our senses – then trusting and believing.
2. By letting go of the fear of receiving guidance.
3. By using affirmations such as “I am profoundly clairvoyant”, “I hear clear and accurate
messages from my guides” “I am open to sensing guidance clearly”.
4. By cleansing and clearing our chakras and aura.
5. By the use of crystals - holding or wearing them.
6. By spending time in nature.
We can test our intuitive abilities... by touching a tree, asking it a question, then
listening for (the very first thought that pops into our mind), seeing, feeling or just
knowing the message/answer that comes to us in response.
7. By keeping a journal and writing down the messages we receive.
8. By meditating.
9. By using oracle cards or a pendulum to 'tune in to', sense or confirm guidance.
Practicing being present, in the now, can also help strengthen our intuitive abilities. To take just 5 minutes a day to relax, be in silence and clear all the chatter from our mind. And....just breathe.
“All credibility, all good conscience, all evidence of truth come only from the senses” …Friedrich Nietzche

PROTECTING OUR ENERGY:
The more open we are, the more important it is to ‘close the door’. This is what a lot of us forget to do. If we pick up someone else’s feelings and energy, we need to clear it, to alleviate the feeling of heaviness or fatigue.
Grounding is the foundation. I picture myself like a tree with roots running down from my feet and into the earth, discarding anything that isn’t mine. I always need to do this after being in a crowd or in an intense conversation or situation. It is energetic hygiene and a practice that can help keep our intuitive abilities sustainable.
Protective crystals such as black tourmaline or black obsidian are wonderful to wear or carry in our pocket or purse to block any negative energy.
We can also place/visualise a bubble of protective light around us before entering a draining environment or situation.
Or call on our guide/s, a diety, angels or depending on our belief system, whoever we believe will help and ask them to protect us and keep us safe.
IN CONCLUSION:
We don’t need to be a professional medium to develop our intuitive gifts. The clairs are a part of our soul’s wisdom and are simply ways our higher self, spirit guides or the universe communicates with us.
Embracing our senses/clairs can help us navigate our way through life with a greater understanding, be more trusting of our intuitive vibes and strengthen our connection to the spirit realm.
Blessings...
Lyndall
